Why do people think hybrids are good for the environment?

The total hype about hybrids seems a waste of time, in view of the fact that the cars themselves are too. What public fail to realize is that hybrids are dreadful for the background. So ,what I was wondering was, why the hell do public blindly swallow the crap that is fed to them about hybrids, and never question it? also, once the batteries are worn out, they need to be replaced, which only furthers the need for mining, and in case i hadn’t mentioned it, mining is in the end putting holes in the Earth
