Has the US Dept of Energy produced anything useful in the last 25 years?

I retract the Dept of Energy effective on tar sands, “inherently safe” nuclear reactors, sterile coal technologies, and methanol powered cars. None of these ever twisted into anything cash-making. Is here anything they have done helpful in the last 25 being?
