Safe, fuel efficient car for 18 year old Girl?

What are the safe brands of cars? I always see ads for Volvos; how are those?

Coldwinterdays2007- Please, do not call me a brat; you don’t know me. If I was spoiled, I would be asking for an expensive sports car, and care if it was SAFE or INEXPENSIVE. I think it is a resonable and responsible wish. I do not feel the need to explain myself further, but I would indeed appreciate it if you would not judge those you do not know.
