Today’s Hybrids (like the Prius) run on gasoline and electricity. The batteries are charged when you are braking and when the engine is running.

In the not too distant future, you will have plug in hybrids (look up the Chevy Volt), that will allow you to charge the batteries at home, but still has an engine that will run a generator to provide power to the electric motors and charge the batteries.

EDIT – I don’t know where you live, but in the US there are no diesel hybrids – gasoline only. Since you said gas and not petrol – I’m guessing you’re in the US?

some regular gas, some on deisel. Sometimes they get electricity from generators in the car, some cars plug in to charge the batteries as well. Depends on what make and model.
