Honda&#039;s hybrids (Civic Hybrid and Insight) do require the gasoline engine to be turning to power the A/C, because their air conditioning compressor is belt-driven by the engine.

On the other hand, hybrids using the Power Split Device system (Ford, Toyota, Nissan and Lexus) usually have an electrically-driven air-conditioning unit (not belt-driven by the gasoline engine), so their A/C works just fine when the car is running in electric mode (gasoline engine off).

My &#039;07 Prius is one of these.  Its electrically-powered A/C works normally no matter what mode the car is running in.</description>
