  1. Lemar J says:

The 2008 and later Chevy Malibu and Saturn Aura are the only current American made hybrid sedans. Both cars have won North American Car of the Year awards.

  2. mrvadeboncoeur says:

Most of the Toyota Camry Hybrids sold in the US are made at the Georgetown, Kentucky plant, but do check the VIN – if it starts with a J, it was imported.
US EPA 33 mpg city/34 mpg highway/34 mpg combined, AT-PZEV in CA emission states

Since you don’t want a hybrid SUV or truck, I won’t list those (long, sad list). (Although the Ford Escape Hybrid/Mercury Mariner Hybrid/Mazda Tribute FWD Hybrid at US EPA 34 mpg city/31 mpg highway/32 mpg combined is the best of the bunch. Again, AT-PZEV in CA emission states.)

If you can wait a year, Ford is introducing the 2009/2010 model year Ford Fusion as a hybrid. No idea if it’ll be made in the US or not.

(I wouldn’t really trust any of the GM “hybrids,” as they’re fairly mild hybrids and not a full hybrid like the Toyota/Ford systems.)

    Other so-called “American”-branded hybrid cars:
Saturn Aura Green Line, US EPA 26 mpg city/34 mpg highway/29 mpg combined.
Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, US EPA 26 mpg city/34 mpg highway/29 MPG combined. But I think this is only available in the CA-emission states…

But again, you’ll have to check the VIN to be sure that a vehicle is built in the US, and not in another country (like Canada or Mexico, common for many “American” car makers (it is American – North American!)). US-made cars have a VIN starting with either a 1, 4, or 5 as their first digit. 2=Canada, 3 = Mexico or Costa Rica, J=Japan, among starting digits…
