hybrid battery

camtheman123 asked:

Ive seen a few wrecked older Honda Insight hybrids for $2-3000. would i be able to just drop in the engine and drivetrain? even if i put all the components in (dashboard, ECU, etc) will it be able to take the camrys weight? is it worth it?
im thinking i can get the engine and parts for around 1200. and my camry gets about 20 Mpg now. not good. the little insight gets like 60 mpgs. what mileage would i get if i do this succesfully?

No, there is so much more to it than just swapping some parts. Unless you have an engineering degree in this field, do not touch it, you will fry yourself with over 10000 volts

It is entirely possible if the internal combustion, electric engine and specialized transmission are intact. The swap will be complex and the Li-Ion battery is very heavy but not impossible to swap. You will also have quite a few computers and sensors to remove and reinstall. As far as being electrocuted. You could easily face the same amount of voltage if you were to remove a spark plug and try to start the car, however, unless you are wearing a pacemaker it does not have the amperage to hurt you…. just jolt you a little. Just make sure the battery has been disconnected. The dashboard, unless it is another camry of the same year will not fit. Best of luck.

There would be zero return on investment on a project like this. Granted, with enough know-how, tools, and money you can do anything but the only real benefit to a hybrid is fuel economy. You’ll never make back what you’ll put into the car on the fuel savings.

    No, not worth it.
