BMW is entering into initial production stages of its Hybrid concept Vision Plug – in with an aim of hitting the roads in 2013 with a production of nearly 10,000 cars per year as they have decided to join the eco-friendly cars.
The Vision Plug – in is a 356 hp 2+2 concept car capable of driving only on electric motor for 31 miles and can propel another 400 miles on the diesel engine which has 6.6 gallon tank capacity. The electric consumption of the Vision is 28.16kWh/100 miles whereas the Chevy Volt is having 25kWh/100 miles of the same.
The Vision needs just about 4.8 seconds to speed to 60 miles/hour from initial, and can speed up to 155 miles/hour with a 3 cylinder 1.5 liter direct injection turbo diesel engine and electric motors on each of the axles. The Vision gets 62.2 mpg and emits a Prius-like 99 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
The BMW by pulling back the Diesel engine just ahead to the back axle which combines with small front electric motor, have achieved a low front end. The Lithium Polymer battery consists of 98 cells to deliver 8.6 kilowatt – hour for driving the car and as per BMW the battery needs 2.5 hours for a full charge at 220 volts.
