how does Obama think he is “helping” the economy by mandating fuel-efficeny standards for vehicles, which wil?

Did you know that you can save fuel and run your car on water

fuel efficiency

Cierra E Wight asked:

since there is no way (at least not to my knowledge) to change all of the cars that are currently on the road and do not meet the standards that Obama described, I can only assume that Obama simply means that all new cars that are created from now on have to meet certain fuel efficiency standards. But with the auto industry barely hanging on by a thread as it is, on top of the expected cost of the new vehicles, does Obama really think anyone is going to (be able to) purchase any of these new vehicles, regardless of their fuel efficiency? Likewise, there are literally millions of unsold new cars that do not have this feature which continue to be unsold out there right now. This begs the question of what will happen to these cars, on which by the way billions of tax $/bailout money was spent. So my question is why on earth would Obama force even MORE $ to be spent on fuel efficiency vehicles if these vehicles will more than likely remain unsold due to the economy. Obama might want to save the auto industry, but he better be prepared to kiss it goodbye when the dollar tanks and inflation hits, which will no doubt within a few months of this.

Obama thinks people are too stupid to make the choices that are right for their particular needs.

  2. J T says:

That manure between his ears causes him to not think clearly…

  3. Pfo says:

Having automakers increase fuel efficiency costs them more money. Which in turn will cost consumers more money. Consuming less fuel also costs oil companies in profits. No part of this proposal helps the economy, this is why it’s not been done, and why it takes someone as naive as him to propose that we do it.

Not that I’m encouraging that we keep making inefficient cars and giving our money away to oil companies; I don’t, but facts are facts.

  4. Question says:

There are now electric cars that can do 140 miles per hour. Your pathetic Republican dinosaur ideology isn’t working any more.

Response to Pfo The oil companies are a dying breed. Your pathetic “Drill baby drill” slogan was just as pathetic as every other idea you morons had in the 2008 campaign

Response to “Typo” When these cars are built in mass numbers they will become cheap. Something that horrifies the oil companies.

ever been in south georgia? there are some old ass cars on the road down here…lol…half this town voted obama we are evenly split racially…and all the stickers etc tell me they did…as do the stickers for the opposition tells me what the other half of the people voted…most of this town is on foodstamps i dont see any black people here driving huge SUVS or the majority of them driving a car at all

  6. Typo says:

Hey by Question-those cars you are talking about run anywhere form $65,000 to $250,000.

So how may of us can afford that?

Besides, it just gives him another excuse to take over the auto manufacturers.

  7. Pilgrim says:

The technology exists to make fuel-efficient cars. It’s just not cost-effective to change over production to make them.

I don’t ever intend to buy an electric hybrid.

But I WILL buy a compressed air hybrid.

A car already exists than can go 100 miles on one tank of compressed air alone. (4,000 lbs of air in a carbon-fiber tank). Add a small gasoline hybrid engine to charge the tank and 1,000 miles on a tank of gas isn’t an unreasonable guesstimate.

  8. San Jose says:

changing the standards, that are typically unattainable, are about as intelligent & good for the economy as “cap and trade” taxes are. In other words – REALLY BAD! When is this twit going to learn?

  9. Still Happy says:

GENIUS!!! You have figured out the EVIL PLANS!!!
    SHOCKING!!!

    Republicans make me laugh……….

I thought Detroit was on board with this?

    Whimper elsewhere.

  11. darcy m says:

Does he think he is helping ….yes he does

he is looking forward…such a change

Come on why are so many cons against ANY change…we need a standard all across the states not just here and there

It will not take place until 2016….time to move on

    Lets go………….

What a novel and refreshing thought, Someone who can actually read between
the Obama lines. Have you also noticed, that none of his legislation except
for the outrageous spending programs take place now or even two years
from Now. Everthing this fool does is a 10 year down the road plan.

So if it all bombs out, which it will. He can blame it on other people. which
is really all he is good at.

He has shown no interest in saving the car industry or our economy. Instead, the question should be who’s interest was he serving with these new standards. Maybe the Italian car company Fiat that just got Chrysler for free and passes off golf carts for cars. That begs the question of who owns Fiat or rather who just bought stock in it. It also helps the battery producers of the electric cars which GE just bought into. Did you forget the chuck of stimulus bill that is going to updating the government fleet with eclogues. It also helps to play into the eco crowd to keep his popularity up. Inflating the dollar and bankrupting us will give him the reason to move us into the world currency base monitored by the IMF. The UN will be the governing base. I guess he bought himself a big vote with the Italians when he runs for head of the UN in 4 years. That would be after he signs over our sovereignty threw treaties with the UN.
Of course, I am just another right wing radical clinging to my guns and God who doesn’t see how Obama is going to save us from ourselves.
Buy a diesel because you can run that off of cooking oil.

  14. cfb193 says:

Don’t you get it. He doesn’t care what the people think, he is now running the auto industry, he and the unions, this is only one thing, we are losing our rights each and everyday. You will at some point get to choose between walking or riding in some unsafe car that most of us will not be able to afford anyhow. This whole mess is ludicrous. I hope we get to see an election in 2010.

  15. wendy c says:

maybe (for once) some comments without name calling and labeling.
The concept is called compromise..AND setting standards that we may not meet next week. Maybe not next year.
I have a “clunker” (ie used) suv, but NO apologies.. you can’t fit a wheelchair in a mini car. OF THE CARS OUT THERE TODAY.. 10-15 yrs from now, they will die.
Someone will buy the new cars..if for no other reason, than they happen to believe in helping the pollution problem, and better mileage. The cost of gas will be cheaper to help offset the price of the vehicle.
The new inventory out there now… it will move. Slower, but it will. The new ones won’t be out for a few years, so SOMEONE will be buying them.
The bottom line is that someone needs to think beyond just the dollar.
As for the present economy.. that is not limited to the auto industry, but they are suffering for a variety of reasons. One being the lack of other jobs.. which he IS TRYING TO HELP. Did you know that of the stimulus money.. it has been voted. Much of that is bottle necked by states that are failing to use it.
Just some alternate thoughts that you can consider. You might even set aside hostility (if you have it) and say..well, she has a point.

  16. Darling J says:

First off, it’s not about “fixing” the economy NOW. It was never about that.

Fuel efficiency reduces our dependence on foreign oil and keeps more money in our pockets.

The standard would only be applied to new vehicles so those needing new ones in 2016 would benefit greatly. Don’t need or want a new car? Don’t buy one in 2016.

    What’s your problem with that?
