I don't think anybody thinks hybrid cars are what we'll drive in future. But it provide good transition into other alternative fuel vehicle. This is the first time(last few years) these cars are mass produced and actually have sold significant numbers.
I don't think anybody think hybrid is the solution, but it definitely is part of the solution. There are other researches, but we can't have fuel cell cars now for some million bucks each. Hybrid is something that give us good transition path into different types of cars.

They would be if they were put out on the market as an attractive alternative to gas driven cars, or if governments pass laws that make it imperative to use a certain percentage of hybrids, but they will never do that. People, young Americans especially, require their sexy looking cars to burn rubber at start off, give them the feeling that they can pass anything in sight, make plenty of macho sounding noise - with big powerful engines that can manage more than 120mph just for braggers rights. The gas engine does all that, will hybrid cars or electric cars do that? Not too likely. There would have to be a huge change in tastes. Can you imagine an electric car doing the quarter mile in several minutes all the while sounding like a big wash machine motor. mmmmmmMMMMMMMMMMMMBUZZZZZZZZZMRRMRRMRRMRRR_ slowing down_WHEEEEEZZZZweeeezzzzzzzweeezzz_errrr r r r r r. Not too romantic, and most of those alternative cars are so homely that most people don't want to be seen in one, and I think for that reason they're made that way so the auto companys can say: "Well, we tried but nobody would buy them."
No, I think we will continue to drive big gas driven autos until every drop of oil is used up, gone. Then people will wonder what to do, and say how did we get in this situation?
Gas prices are kept at certain levels; getting people used to those prices. Then prices go up, people complain, talk about alternative fuels, make a fuss, the prices are lowered a little or stabalized; complaining stops, things settle down, back to normal, cars get bigger, speeds increase, everythings ok for a while, untill prices go up again then the whole thing starts all over This scenerio has repeated itself several times since the early 70s. People said all the same things way back then, alternative fuel etc. And here we are today; same thing. Nothing will change, my friends.

By the way, steam engines require some kind of fuel(wood, coal or oil) to heat water to turn it into the steam that operates the engine.

Look to Brazil. Almost completely independent of foreign oil. Why, you ask? Because when we had the last oil scare in the 70's they started developing alternative fuels. Now almost everything in the country runs on Ethanol made out of sugar cane. We can do this, don't think we can't. The only reason is that the oil companies elect our politicians, not the citizens.

no go entirely electric. hybrids still use oil i think. then try the usual remedies windpower, solar power, electric power, not entire solution but will help . too many people need electrticity to do what would entirely resolve consumption of energy electrical wise. what is needed is to use oil to make products which use solar power and other things to complete the switch then just use these resources

I believe that hybrid cars is ONE possible small step for man kind towards a better greener tomorrow, it is not the only solution since we still got factories going, polluting the air, animals going extinct, icebergs melting and other astronomical crisis the planet is currently going through. Hybrids, in my opinion, are a United States thing since I think they are the no.1 consumer in automobiles so it's like a marketing plo to get people aware of our environment. Hybrid cars is one small solution as I heard they are trying to event cars without gas. At any rate, there are still people out there who simply don't care about the environment regardless of Nancy Pelosi's statement or whoever....I'm rambling.
