Fuel efficency of BMW e36’s?

Hi all, im looking to buy a BMW e36 and just have a couple of questions. I was at the start inane for a 325i but upon conception about it i found out that they consume a lot of fuel, so i altered my mind for a 318i and then read that the 318is has better normal than the 318i and also has the fuel efficiency, but the only problem is that apparently you have to use premium unleaded gas for the 318is, in the end what i want to know is which will save me more cash on gas, the 325i or the 318is (using premium unleaded on the 318is)? And also does it make a difference or do any hurt to place fixed unleaded in a 318is?
